What is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?

Definition

Click-through rate (CTR) in SEO is the percentage of people who click your search result after seeing it — calculated as clicks ÷ impressions × 100. Average organic CTR varies dramatically by position: position 1 averages 28–39% CTR; position 10 averages 2–3%. CTR is visible in Google Search Console.

Why Click-Through Rate (CTR) matters for Shopify stores

CTR is the direct output of meta title and meta description quality. Two stores ranking at the same position but with different meta copy will get very different traffic volumes. A 1% CTR improvement at 50,000 monthly impressions is 500 additional free visits per month.

Shopify example

A home decor store ranks 4th for 'rattan baskets' with a generic meta title 'Rattan Baskets — Store Name' and 2.1% CTR. After Sauron generates 'Handwoven Rattan Baskets — Free UK Delivery Over £40', CTR rises to 4.8% — a 129% traffic increase with no ranking change.

How Sauron handles Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Sauron's AI generation is explicitly optimised for CTR — it pulls competitor meta titles from SERP data and generates titles designed to stand out. GSC integration then tracks whether CTR improves after each update.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring CTR and focusing only on rankings — a rank 3 with high CTR beats rank 1 with low CTR
  • Using the same meta description template across all products
  • Not including the primary keyword in meta titles — reduces perceived relevance
  • Not A/B testing different title formats to find what drives higher CTR in your niche
