What are Core Web Vitals?

Definition

Core Web Vitals are a set of three specific page experience metrics that Google uses to measure real-world user experience on web pages. The three metrics are: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how quickly the main content loads; Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how stable the page layout is during loading; and First Input Delay (FID) / Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how responsive the page is to user interactions. Since May 2021, Core Web Vitals have been a confirmed Google ranking factor under the Page Experience update.

Why Core Web Vitals matters for Shopify stores

Shopify stores typically struggle with Core Web Vitals because Shopify's app ecosystem adds significant JavaScript to pages, and many themes load large hero images unoptimised. A poor Core Web Vitals score puts your store at a measurable disadvantage in search rankings — and creates a worse shopping experience that hurts conversion rates too. Google classifies scores as Good (green), Needs Improvement (yellow), or Poor (red). Stores in the Poor range are at a confirmed ranking disadvantage versus competitors in the Good range.

Shopify example

A fashion store installs a live chat app, a loyalty programme widget, and a recently-viewed products slider. Each adds JavaScript that fires before the page is interactive. The LCP degrades from 2.1s (Good) to 4.8s (Poor). Google's ranking signal for page experience changes from positive to negative. Sauron's Lighthouse audit identifies all three apps as contributing to the LCP regression.

Common mistakes

  • Installing too many Shopify apps without auditing their performance impact
  • Using unoptimised hero images (LCP is almost always caused by a large, slow-loading image)
  • Fonts that load late and cause layout shift (CLS)
  • App widgets that appear after initial load, shifting content down (CLS)
  • Not monitoring Core Web Vitals after theme updates — changes often cause regressions

Questions about Core Web Vitals

What is a good Core Web Vitals score for Shopify? +

Google's thresholds: LCP should be under 2.5 seconds, CLS should be under 0.1, and INP should be under 200ms. Shopify stores often start in the 'Needs Improvement' range and can reach 'Good' by optimising the hero image, deferring non-critical scripts, and reducing app count.

How do I check my Shopify store's Core Web Vitals? +

Google Search Console's Core Web Vitals report shows field data from real users. Google PageSpeed Insights shows lab data (simulated conditions). Sauron runs Lighthouse audits on your store and stores historical scores so you can track improvement over time.
