What is a Keyword Cluster?

Definition

A keyword cluster is a group of semantically related keywords that share the same search intent and should be targeted together on the same page. Rather than creating individual pages for every keyword variation (which leads to keyword cannibalization), keyword clustering groups related terms under one comprehensive page that addresses all variations of a topic. For example, 'sterling silver necklace', 'silver chain necklace', and '925 silver necklace' might form one cluster targeting a single product page.

Why Keyword Cluster matters for Shopify stores

Keyword clustering helps Shopify store owners build a realistic page architecture without creating hundreds of thin, near-duplicate pages. Instead of separate pages for 'silver necklace', 'sterling silver necklace', and '925 necklace', you create one well-optimised product page that addresses all three — using the primary keyword in the title and incorporating semantic variants naturally in the description. This consolidates ranking signals on fewer, stronger pages rather than diluting them across many weak ones.

Shopify example

Sauron generates 10 keyword candidates for a silver necklace product: 'sterling silver necklace' (2,400/mo), '925 silver necklace' (1,900/mo), 'silver chain necklace women' (1,200/mo), 'dainty silver necklace' (880/mo), etc. These form one cluster. Sauron selects 'sterling silver necklace' as the primary keyword (highest volume) and the generated title incorporates the cluster: 'Sterling Silver Necklace | 925 Silver Chain | Dainty Layering Jewellery'.

How Sauron handles Keyword Cluster

Sauron's keyword research generates 10 cluster candidates per product, validates search volumes, and stores the full cluster — so you can see all related terms your page should target, not just the primary keyword.

Common mistakes

  • Creating separate pages for every keyword variation — this creates keyword cannibalization
  • Not using semantic keyword variants in the page content — the primary keyword alone is insufficient
  • Treating a keyword cluster as static — clusters should be updated as new search trends emerge
  • Clustering keywords with different search intents on the same page — buyer intent ('buy silver necklace') and informational intent ('how to clean silver necklace') are different clusters needing different pages

Questions about Keyword Cluster

How many keywords should be in a cluster? +

There's no fixed number — cluster size depends on the breadth of a topic. A product page cluster might have 5–15 closely related terms. A major collection page cluster might have 20–40 terms. The limit is search intent consistency: all clustered keywords should be satisfied by the same page content.
