Link Building

What is Link Juice?

Definition

Link juice is an informal term for the ranking authority or equity passed from one page to another through hyperlinks. A link from a high-authority page to your store passes more 'juice' than one from a low-authority site. Nofollow links traditionally don't pass link juice, though Google now treats them as hints.

Why Link Juice matters for Shopify stores

Internal link juice distribution matters significantly for Shopify stores. Your homepage receives the most external links, but that authority should flow through to your collection and product pages via internal links. Poor internal linking traps authority on the homepage.

Shopify example

A beauty brand's homepage has 200 backlinks. But the homepage only links to 5 top collections, not individual product pages. Products linked from those collections receive homepage juice indirectly. Products buried 4 levels deep in navigation receive almost none.

Common mistakes

  • Using nofollow on all internal links, blocking juice distribution
  • Having a flat navigation that doesn't channel authority toward priority pages
  • Creating orphan pages that receive no internal links and thus no juice
  • Assuming external link count alone determines ranking — quality and relevance of linking domains matter more
